GOTS is the world’s leading textile processing standard for organic fibres, including social & ecological criteria.

About us

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibres, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent certification for the entire textile supply chain. GOTS covers the entire post-harvest processing (including spinning, knitting, weaving, dyeing and manufacturing) of apparel and home textiles made with certified organic fibre (such as organic cotton and organic wool), and includes both environmental and social criteria. Key provisions include a ban on the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), highly hazardous chemicals (such as azo dyes and formaldehyde), and child labour, while requiring strong social compliance management systems and strict waste-water treatment practices. GOTS was developed by leading international standard setters - Organic Trade Association (U.S.), Japan Organic Cotton Association, International Association Natural Textile Industry (Germany), and Soil Association (UK) to define globally-recognised requirements that ensure the organic status of textiles, from field to finished product. GOTS is a non-profit organisation which is self-financed. For more information please visit our website: www.global.standard.org.

  • Not surprisingly, the majority of adults in the UK would turn their backs on brands if they discovered they were falsely claiming their textile products were organic. Let's unite in saying no to greenwashing and instead choose brands that certify their organic textile products with the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). Together, we can make informed and sustainable choices - Find Better, Look for Organic🌿   Running from 13-19 May, Organic Textile Week is an awareness campaign dedicated to raising the profile of certified organic textiles in the UK. This celebration will not only promote certified organic textiles but educate everyone about greenwashing in the textiles industry, and empower shoppers and industry professionals alike to make informed decisions. Opting for certified items made from organic fibres means selecting clothing that is not only better for me, my family, and the workers involved but also for the planet. It's a win-win for everyone involved! 🌱💚 • • • • #OrganicFashion  #OrganicTextileWeek  #FindBetter  #LookForOrganic  #UKOrganic  #EcoFriendlyChoices  #SustainableLiving  #nogreenwashing #sayyestogots #2024 #behindtheseams

  • WRAP Releases 2024 Textiles Market Situation Report According to climate action NGO WRAP, the UK purchased 1.42 million tonnes of textiles in 2022, nearly matching the 1.45 million tonnes of used textiles circulated the same year. The report also reveals that 711,000 tonnes of post-consumer textiles end up in black bins and general waste at Household Waste Recycling Centres annually, equating to roughly 30,000 shipping containers of discarded fashion and home textiles. GOTS supports the improvement actions highlighted by Textiles 2030, a WRAP initiative and the UK’s leading voluntary initiative supporting businesses and organisations within the fashion and textiles industry to transition to more sustainable and circular practices by the end of the decade, including the move from conventional to organic cotton. WRAP cautions of a looming crisis, as more post-consumer clothing floods the second-hand market and the proliferation of fast fashion undermines the profitability of second-hand clothing markets. The UK's infrastructure for textile disposal requires urgent support for recycling and reuse organisations to prevent landfilling. Improved garment durability through better design is also emphasized. GOTS & WRAP urge key partners across brands, retailers, investors and governments to support the sector through grants, investment and legislation so textiles can catalyse a more circular fashion ecosystem.
